Where Can I Get A Reliable Rebuilt Transmission for a 1994 Chevy Truck

Reader Question
Hey I have a 1994 Chevy k1500 and the transmission blown. would it be more reliable to have it rebuilt or replace it with a junkyard diamond?
thanks

Hey there,

You said RELIABLE not cost effective…if you like the vehicle and plan to keep it awhile I would call a few GM dealerships in your area and get a price on a GM rebuilt transmission you can either install yourself or pay your local mechanic to install it. They come filled with fluid and basically just unbolt your old transmission and bolt up the new one. This is the BEST way to go; you also get a nationwide GM warranty. The cost is usually just a tad more than dealing with your local transmission shop…..which can be a nightmare if you have never dealt with them before.

A junk yard transmission is cheaper but has a lot of risk. If you plan on selling the vehicle immediately it might be a good option but not a good one if you want to keep on driving this vehicle. My personal success rate with used transmissions is about 8 months, 2 years with a rebuilt local transmission and about 5 years + with a GM rebuilt.

Blessings,

Austin Davis
