2001 Ford Taurus Rough Idle

Reader Question: My 2001 Ford Taurus within the past week and a half has decided to idle rough. The transmission fluid, oil, power steering fluid, and coolant all appear to be fine.

It seems to have started after a bad batch of gas. I used one of those fuel cleaners to try to fix the problem.

It did not seem to fix the problem and now my check engine light is on and my car gets regular maintenance.

What do you think it should be?

Hi Alicia,

I would get your mechanic to read your onboard computer codes and see what is going on here. This could be something simple like the need for a tune up or a bad spark plug wire but there are so many things to guess at you really need a proper diagnosis.

The check engine light is on because the computer system is seeing a problem. Low fluid levels and the need for fuel cleaners are usually not something that will cause the check engine light to come on.

Faulty emissions control sensors and the need for a tune up are a few things that can cause the light to come on.
