1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass

Reader Question: Hi Austin,

My 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass rear defroster stopped working yesterday. I checked the fuse and its ok and the power light is on when I press the button on the dash, but it does not defrost.

Is there a relay for this near the fuse under the hood? Or, what else could it be?

Hey Joe,

I do not recall off hand if there is another relay elsewhere but if you see the light working on the switch, I would assume you have power to the switch and that the switch is probably working correctly…probably.

I would make sure the rear defroster connections, which either is in the trunk or in the rear window is connected to the plug on the glass itself.

Sometimes the connector gets unplugged when unloading groceries or something bumps the glass.

I am in Houston. We seldom work on defrost problems, so I am not very knowledgeable with them off the top of my head.

If the plug to the rear glass is plugged in and the fuse is good, I would probably replace the switch on the dash…or at least test it if you can.
