2002 Jeep Liberty SUV – A Bad Resister or Blower Relay Problem
Reader Question: Hi,
I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty 4×4 Sport Utility Vehicle. My heat is hot and my air is cold. However, my controls are giving me problems. I have 4 settings and 1 and 2 have stopped working. 3 and 4 both work with 3 blowing high and 4 even higher. Sometimes, after I turn my setting back down to 2 after having it on at 3 it will start working but not every time.
I have heard that it might be my blower resister but I also heard it might be my heater cores. By any chance, would you know which one is right if either?
Thanks!
Kala
Hi Kala,
It sounds like you have a switching problem and not a heater core issue.
Usually when the resistor fails, the blower motor will default to the HIGH speed only and all other speeds will do nothing.
I personally have not seen this 3 and 4 setting issue like you described, but it does kinda sound like a bad resister or blower relay problem if you just wanted to take a wild guess yourself.
I would call the dealership PARTS department and ask them, which part they sell more of and give them your complaint and symptoms. The parts guys are more likely to help you diagnose the problem since the get a commission on the part they sell you unlike the service department which gets a commission on the service they sell you.
The parts guys usually know which parts fail most and have a good idea of what the problem is most of the time.

I had a similar problem with my 02 liberty limited. Only setting 4 worked and nothing else. I replaced the blower motor resistor, which can be found behind the glove compartment, and it fixed my problem.
I have a jeep liberty sport 02 and Iam having the very same problem. I went out and bought a resister and will attept to replace it as soon as I find out how I heard it’s a plug and play connection. Please let me know if you should hear anymmore on this.
