I was wondering if there is any way I can fix my fuel gage myself. I have never repaired anything on a car. Therefore, I think it may be best if I get a mechanic to do it. How much do you think it would cost (ballpark) for someone to do that (plus labor, tax, and all that)?

Hi Ben,

You will need to get your mechanic to diagnose the problem for you. Depending on what is wrong you may or may not be able to repair it yourself. The problem could be inside the fuel tank, like from a bad sending unit or an electrical problem in the dashboard. You are probably looking at $75-100 to diagnose the problem.

There are too many things to guess at, and I do not know what kind of vehicle this is so I really cannot guess at a price quote.

Reader Updates: It is a 1987 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale. It only has 61,000 miles on it. When I fill it up, the meter only goes up about half way. I went to an auto repair shop and they said that the part does not come by its self, and you have to get the whole unit. That, labor, taxes, and everything will all cost around US$320.

I want to know:

(1) If they are right about it not being sold by its self.

(2) If the price sounds about right ($250 for the part and the rest in labor and taxes and stuff).

Hey Ben,

The price sounds about right if they are going to replace the fuel-sending unit inside the fuel tank, which is what I think is your problem.
