1997 Toyota 4Runner

Reader Question: Hello,

I have a 1997 Toyota 4Runner 4×4 six cylinder that has recently been difficult to start. I did the pain-staking task of removing the starter and had it tested and it passed with flying colors. I also recently replaced my battery which when I try to start vehicle and it does not start. I turn on lights, other electrical items, and all work to full capacity so I know my battery is not faulty.

So, my question is why is my vehicle having trouble starting? When I first try to start it, I only hear a click. Therefore, I turn the key to off and then restart over and over and eventually it starts.

I hope that you can help me.

Thank you in advance for any info you may be able to help with.

Shane

Hey Shane,

Have you turned on and watched the headlights when you try to start the engine?

Here is an article about what to look for –

Car Engine Won’t Start – Is Battery Dead?

First thing I would do it get a complete electrical test ON the vehicle. Do not remove parts for testing; rather take the vehicle to the mechanic. Some items behave differently when tested OFF the vehicle.

Your electrical test should include the following:

1. Load test battery

2. Check starter voltage draw

3. Check battery cables and grounds

4. Check starter solenoid and starter connections and grounds

5. Check for a voltage drain

You probably have either a weak battery or a problem with the starter. The click you hear can be due to low voltage being sent to the starter because the battery is weak, or it could be because there is a starter solenoid problem.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
