1998 Toyota Camry

Reader Question: My 1998 Toyota Camry has an intermittent problem.

When driving, sometimes, about 3 miles, and coming to a stop, I notice the RPM gauge moving from 50 to 100 and seems like its going to stall. I can continue to drive it, but when stopping at a traffic light, it does the same thing. This happens every 2-3 weeks. It can happen after a 5-minute drive or a 25-minute drive.

After letting it rest for about 10 minutes, it goes away. It will not reoccur for another 2 to 3 weeks. I have taken it to the dealer, but they are unable to find any problem. This has been going on for about 6 months.

I even try revving the engine when it is doing this, but it continues doing it until it has rested for about 10 minutes. Then I will not have that problem for another 2-3 weeks.

I have even changed gas to the higher grade, but that still did not work.

Do you have any idea what the problem might be?

Thank you,

Stef

Hey there Stef,

I would have your mechanic inspect and clean, as needed the Throttle Body and Idle Control motor.

This is a simple and fairly inexpensive item and should be done periodically for good maintenance.

A dirty throttle body can cause rough erratic idle speeds like you describe.

Blessings,
Austin Davis
