Chevy Truck Automatic Transmission is Slipping – Do I Need an Overhaul?
Reader Question A friend of mine has a 1997 Chevy Silverado with an automatic transmission. About two months ago she was driving and the transmission line that goes into the cooler came out. That was replaced along with the fluid.
Now there has been problems with the transmission revving up higher than normal, or not shifting properly. Sometimes not wanting to go over about 30 mph. Does this mean that the transmission needs to be replaced?
HI there,
I would suspect that something is wrong inside the transmission. The cooler line probably blew off because of excess internal fluid pressure. If the transmission fluid is full and clean (should be pinkish in color and NOT smell like a BBQ pit) and the transmission is slipping…..you got an internal problem and should talk to a transmission shop.
You can try servicing the fluid and filter, but you take a risk of making things worse. So get someone to drive it first and give their opinion before you rush out and service this transmission.
Here is more about the issue
Automatic Transmission Slipping
The transmission is sealed, so there really isn’t much that can be done with the transmission still in the vehicle. Before they decide to overhaul it at the local transmission shop…..call the GM dealer and get a price on a rebuilt transmission.
I have had GREAT success with GM transmission, they come ready to install already loaded with fluid…..just unbolt the old one and install the new one. You get a nationwide GM warranty!! Yes, it will cost a little more, but if you have ever dealt with a transmission shop before…..its money well spent.
