Subaru Forrester Check Engine Light is On
Reader Question Hi Mr. Davis,
Firstly, thanks for being around. I do hope I get a reply from you at your earliest.
I filled gas in my car last Monday and on Tuesday evening on my way home, my check engine light came on. I ran the car for 4 days after that and it is still on. Everything is working fine, the engine sounds good too. It is a 1998 Subaru Forrester stick shift with about 103000 miles on it.
I spoke to the dealers and they said that maybe I might have not tightened the fuel tank cap properly and so the light came on but what worries me is that the light is not going off. I drive it for about 12 to 15 miles a day or 20 miles max a day.
Thanks Austin. I appreciate your taking time to reply.

HI Joan,
Thanks for your email and your comment. The first thing that came to mind as I read your email was a loose gas cap, as the dealer suggested. Since that is not the case, I would assume the check engine light came on and the fact that you filled up with fuel is just coincidental. If there was “bad gas” the engine would run bad if at all. There are MANY reasons for a check engine light to come on, so I can only suggest that you have the dealer read the computer codes and see what it happening. The computer system on that car is not something any ole repair shop would be experienced with diagnosing properly, so the dealer might be the best place for this repair unless you have someone you feel comfortable with .
Have you read my check engine light article?
Blessings,
Austin Davis
