2000 Nissan Pathfinder Makes a Loud Noise When I Start It

Reader Question When I start my 2000 Nissan Pathfinder suv it makes a screetch. It sounds like its from the starter. Is the started going? If so, about how much is a new starter?

Response If you hear the noise when you have the key in the start position, but the noise stops as soon as the engine starts…you could have a bad starter and or flywheel (the part the starter engages on the engine) if the noise is still there after you let off the start position with the engine running you could have a loose fan belt or a bad belt tensioner or belt pulley?
