My Car Alternator is Smoking – Is It Safe To Drive?
Reader Question
Alternator is smoking when I connect new battery (Connected properly). All other electronics are functional (radio, lights, etc….) except the reading for battery gauge on the cluster. Is it safe to drive to a garage and if I install a new alternator will it fix the issue?
Hey there,
Yes, a new alternator will more than likely correct this problem. I have seen car fires from alternators so I can not tell you to go ahead and drive there in this condition. Can you do a search for a mobile mechanic in your area to come to you and install an alternator you furnish? Or have it towed to the shop.
Blessings,
